Rue sits by the edge of the lake admiring the view of the water. She sits with her legs pulled into her chest just resting her head on her knees. She begins rehearsing the story she plans to tell everyone she meets in the junkyard...
"Hey, names Rue...Bet your a little confused about what I'm doing here, huh? Well, let me tell you my story...." *fades into flash back*
Rue prances through the meadow near her home. It's a beautiful spring morning, the smell of the wild flowers is over whelming! The sun is shining so brightly she almost can't see. Suddenly, she spots a butterfly resting on a nearby flower. She crouches down to the ground, she adjusts her angle.....and POUNCE. "Owwwwaahhh missed again!" she squeals. Rue looks up to see her mother running toward her with fear in her eyes. "You NAUGHTY kitten! You nearly frightened me to death with all the squealing." her mother scolds her. "I'm sorry momma," Rue frowns. "I was trying to catch that butterfly," she says while pointing in the direction it flew to. "But, I missed...again." Rue huffs and she plops down onto her back in the tall grass. Her mother leans over her and pats her hair. "Well, alright my darling, but please no more squealing today, okay?" Rue's mother returned to the house.
Rue found herself dozing lazily in the grass...But when she awoke the sky had turned red and smoke filled the air. She flew up in a panic searching franticly for her momma. She turned to see the home she'd known for 4 years burning to the ground. No sign of her momma anywhere. She searched for hours but never saw her momma again.
"It's a short story. I lost my momma when I was 4, ended up an orphan. I traveled a lot, from city to city. I never found a place that felt like home. I was always a pretty self sufficient child, so I didn't seem to have much trouble looking after myself. I always managed to find a scrap to eat and a place to sleep...." *fades into another flash back*
Rue, Age 8
*Shivers* "It's so cold out here!" Rue looks to the sky as the snow is falling down onto the sidewalks of the city. "I have to find somewhere warm to sleep tonight, and a scrap of food. I'm starving!" *grumble grumble* Rue pats her growling tummy and continues to walk down the sidewalk hoping to find an alley nearby that has some boxes and full garbage cans. As she walks past an alley way she spots another cat...just like her. Rue shakes her head. "Must be my imagination....I haven't seen a single cat since I've been in this city," she thinks to herself. Then....it moves. "HEY! You there!" Rue shouts and runs towards the cat. Suddenly, it's gone. She chases after the mysterious cat....it's too late, it's gone. Rue sighs. "Damn, now what do I do?" Rue wanders down the alley. She finds a nice dry box, an old tattered blanket and a few scraps of food. She settles down into her box for the night and prays she will see that cat again....
"I wandered from city to city until I came across the city outside of the junkyard. I met some local cats who told me about this place. They said there was always a home available there for me if I wanted it....I resisted at first, I'd always been on my own, taking care of myself. But truth be told, I was lonely. I'd never once made a friend during all my travels. So, here I am."
Rue shakes her head. "Pathetic. I sound like a whiney little kitten looking for sympathy." Rue stretches her legs out and hops off the ground. She walks towards the water, kicking her paws along the sandy beach....
